It happens because of the way email works:
Download message
Stop downloading message
Write to disk
Download message
Stop downloading message
Write to disk
Download message
Stop downloading message
Write to disk
The Stop download messages and Write to disk parts interupt the
download, thus brinning the overall data speed down too.
If you get a load if very big emails, then most of the time is spent
downloading rather then saving them to disk.
There isn't really any way round that I'm afraid, except a faster
CPU/Hard drive to speed up saving them
